How to Use Your Own Stem Cells to Repair Your Heart

You would think that having artificial hearts available in the USA would cause other nations to look at us as the greatest lifesavers in the world when it comes to heart patients who would have no chance for survival without one. Well, as it turns out, Thailand is actually engaged in therapy that is saving the lives of heart disease patients by using something you may not know exists...I know I hadn't heard about it. This therapy, although experimental is proving to be an incredible tool and one that will be getting alot more press in the months ahead. What is this "hush-hush" procedure? Stem Cell therapy! No - not using someone else's stem cells, YOUR OWN! That's right - and it sounds fascinating. Here's the story:

I met a courteous man by the name of Al recently who picked me up in a limousine to take me to the airport. Nice guy and in his late sixties. He looked very healthy and we began talking about wellness and natural healh. We talked about how he eats healthfully and why he is so intent upon doing everything possible to stay well. Apparently, Al wasn't always so healthy because he had severe heart and valve damage. He explained that he would have died if he hadn't discovered the new procedure being offered in Thailand.

He and others have opted to leave the American medical care scene to seek treatments only available in that country where there are no regulations governing experimental treatments that offer promise. Risky? Maybe...but he feels the risk was worth it. Is it right for you? You need to do some research and ask alot of questions.

Thailand's stem cell treatment avoids the controversy surrounding ethics involving the use of stems cells from outside donors where human embryos are destroyed to collect the cells. Instead Thailand seems to have developed a method of extracting and harvesting stem cells from the patients own blood. Amazing? It sure is.

Al continued his story, telling me that he flew to Thailand at a total cost of approximately $30,000 to have the procedure. Somehow the patient's own stem cells are harvested by chemically "shaking them" loose from the bone marrow of the patients and then extracting them from their blood by a special process.

The stem cells, after processing are reintroduced into the patient's body. After reintroduction, they begin the process of rebuilding the heart tissue and/or valves. Like many of the others having this procedure, Al had a difficult time walking from his driveway into his home. He is now riding his bike daily, lifts suitcases (he easily put my 40lb bag in the trunk) and lives quite an normal life. His family is happy he made the choice. In these procedures, stem cells are extracted from a patient's own blood, cultured in a lab and implanted directly into the blocked coronary artery or, when no artery is available, into the scarred area in the heart. The goal is to rebuild heart muscle and/or improve blood flow. About 350 patients have been treated so far.

More than 400 cardiologists and other healthcare workers are attending a conference to be held in South Wales. The medical conference will highlight the latest advances in stem cell research and how it can repair heart tissue. There is also a possibility that this procedure may be available in the coming months in Canada and other countries.

Apparently, this personal stem cell treatment may be the solution to help reverse certain auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and others. Some doctors in Thailand are using stem cell enriched fat for breast reconstruction procedures. Stem cells seem to help grow new blood vessels in the fat creating new living cells inside the breast. Researchers are saying that this breast tissue is more normal to the touch and can help to repair the breast dents found after lumpectomies and other procedures. It does take longer than implants to get good results but they are hopeful that eventually, using the person's own stem cells may be the best solution. octors in Brazil are using similar techniques successfully to treat Type I Diabetic Patents. It seems that in a small group of diabetics 14 out of 15 patients have been able to stop daily insulin injections. More is on the horizon.

If you or someone you know is suffering with heart disease do whatever you can to help yourself stay well. Follow your doctor's recommendations, eat healthfully, exercise as you are allowed or instructed to, and continue to do your own research. I find that most often doctors have very little time to investigate what is happening in other countries. Wisely, they also will try to prevent their patients from rushing off to other countries where there is no scientific basis for the procedure or therapies offered. In this case, I think your doctor might want to learn more about this new stem cell research. Perhaps your physician can speak with doctors at the Thailand clinic on your behalf to get important details. Do alot of research before you make a decision to participate in this or any other therapy outside of the USA. Talk with patients who have undergone treatment as well as the doctors who provide it.

I think we owe the medical scientists a great deal of thanks all around the world. Perhaps eventually all nations will work together to bring the most efficient and effective discoveries to those who need them. Hadn't I learned about this technique from my limo driver, I would not have known about it...it didn't make the front page news. Valuable discoveries like this should be highlighted immediately and taught to medical teams all around the world. But, before you make your decision please do as much research as possible, look at every other reasonable option you have here in the USA, talk with your doctors, your family, and other health care authorities. No doubt you can probably find patients who have undergone the treatment by searching on line or by asking the clinic in Thailand for patient referrals.

Wishing you wellness.

The Most Important Person in the World

Some say that moms are the most important people in the world, after all; where would we be without moms? And dads too. We wouldn't be at all!!

Sisters and brothers can be very important in our lives, and in many ways create the foundations of what we are by testing us throughout our life's journey. And when they are gone, we miss them terribly.

Then there are our grandmothers and grandfathers; a wealth of wisdom that quickly slips through our fingers before we have a chance to really talk with them.

Friends! How about our many friends who have seen us through all of our scrapes and bruises? What would we do without friends? Or lovers? Maybe our wives and husbands are, after all, the most important people, or perhaps . . . it is our children.

Could it be our president, or our congressional representatives? Hmm, probably not! Is it our religious figures or our corporate icons? Who could it be?

Dare we think that the most important person in the world is none other than ourselves? Well - that would be a bit egotistical - probably true, but not ideal!

So who could it really be; that most important person in the world? I contend that it is the next person you meet.

The next person you meet is the only person that exists in the world at that particular moment - for you. In that exact instant, they are everything, and anything else is imagination. But we don't realize the importance of this meeting, and take such meetings for granted, being barely conscious of them. Passing ships on a foggy night.

Where are we, if not present in this one, amazing moment? If we could but experience just one moment in time, truly and completely, our entire lives would change. New worlds would open before our very eyes, and a life that can become so wearisome would take on a new life of its own. And we would be renewed.

When our minds are focused on the reality of that which is directly in front of us, a powerful energy is produced. When we no longer take for granted everyday situations, a door opens to the most profound understandings within the ordinariness of life.

You may have met people who have this knack. You become the most important thing in their world the moment you meet them, as if they melt into your very being and become a part of you, completely forgetting about themselves and their problems and distractions. It makes quite an impression, and you remember them.

This is called selflessness; compassion from a standpoint of unity, but also wisdom from a standpoint of individuality. These four melding together, wisdom, compassion, unity, and individuality - dissolve barriers.

When we lack this kind of bare attention, we never see the other. All we see are images of the other. Then the compassion changes to suspicion, the wisdom to ignorance, and unity is sacrificed totally for individuality. Lack of attention breeds fear, because when we don't see clearly, we become fearful of the unknown. Only when we know every aspect of a situation, which means being present in all circumstances, can fear dissolve and love emerge.

The flip side of not seeing clearly is the worry and fear we live with every day. Regardless of how good it gets, something is always there to remind us that we are vulnerable to things changing, or to remind us of the harrowing prospect that our circumstances may never change! Only when we see clearly how things work can we forget about them, and ourselves, and experience the freedom to truly relate to others. Otherwise, we remain entrapped in a confining, self-absorbed identity that is totally individual, lacking all concept of unity.

If you have experienced yourself absorbing into something greater, bigger than yourself, then you understand the importance of living each moment. It is a skill; an important one in a world that needs some love.

But it takes courage, the highest courage.

Ten Healthy Ways to Remember a Deceased Loved One

Are you afraid that now with the funeral over and everyone has gone back to their usual roles that your loved one will slowly be forgotten? Or, are you wondering what you might do to make it clear that the deceased is still a part of your family and will forever be so?

There are many things you can do that will honor the deceased and at the same time keep his/her memory alive. In many instances the way you remember the person will be a source of wisdom and humor that can last for years and be an inspiration in life.

Here are ten ways to begin showing love even though you are separated from your beloved.

1. When the time is right (and only you will know when) tell your favorite story about the loved one. It could be a funny story or one that illustrates his/her character. Pick the right place and persons to share the best with, and be alert to inject it as a normal and natural extension of the conversation.

2. Periodically, use a favorite recipe that your loved one liked to eat or cook. You could also serve his/her favorite dessert with a reminder of what the conversation was like when it was served.

3. Plant a memory garden or a tree, bush, or flowers that bloom each year and are referred to as "Sarah's Garden," "Mary's tree" or Joe's plant." Choose items that were the favorites of your loved one. If possible, put them in a space so that when you look out your window they can be seen and you can comment on their growth or looks during the year.

4. Use your loved one's first name each day. You can do this by choosing to talk to him/her each day, either silently or out loud, or you can tell others that you hope they will feel free to use the name and talk about the loved one when referring to them would be natural in a particular conversation.

5. At holidays, birthdays, summer cookouts, or anniversaries find a way to symbolically recognize the presence of the loved one. Use a particular utensil when cooking; display a special item that belonged to the deceased; light a candle in home and/or in church; display something the person made or painted; make a toast in which the person is mentioned by name or hang a particular ornament or object that characterizes the loved one.

6. Do something to carry on the charitable interest your loved one had in a particular organization or cause. It could be things like the preservation of some part of the environment, the sponsorship of a child in an orphanage, helping the homeless, or volunteering at a soup kitchen. You may also want to consider establishing a scholarship at a high school or college.

7. Play your loved one's favorite song or a song from his/her favorite entertainer or television show. It can also be useful to find music that was popular earlier in your life that can bring up old memories of you and the loved one.

8. On an anniversary or other special day, ask your best friend to take a trip to a favorite spot that you used to go to with your loved one. While there discuss the past and the memories this visit evokes. When you are further along with reinvesting in life, you may wish to make this trip by yourself, and choose to talk to your deceased loved one about the good times you had there.

9. Make a collage of pictures of the loved one that can be framed and placed in your home and/or office. If you possess a specific artistic talent (or you could hire someone) draw cartoons or symbols that illustrate the interests, character, or skills of the person and include them in the collage. Include a sample of the deceased's work, if appropriate.

10. Have a plaque made with your loved one's name engraved on it with a favorite saying (yours or one your loved one liked). Inquire at your local college or university, if he/she was associated with it, if they would accept a donation of a bench for the campus with your loved one's name on it. Or purchase a bench and place it in your garden area or at a cemetery garden.

In summary, the way you remember your loved one is only limited by your creativity. So take into consideration what you learned from your loved one, how he/she helped others, and how you feel he/she would like to be remembered. Ask others you trust for their input. Then decide how you will keep the memory of your loved one alive by the tangible reminders you create.

Ponce Carnival - A Symbolic Welcome to Lent

The festival in the city of Ponce in Puerto Rico, called Ponce Carnival, had been yearly celebrated for 150 years already since its beginning in 1858. It is an interesting event as a spectator will witness several locals wearing the famous costumes of the creatures they call "vejigantes" or devils. Each vejigante wears a mask, a cape and a suit. Vejigantes may wear colorful costumes and even wear the colors red, blue and white of the Puerto Rican flag. But a vejigante must have a mask that should not just be any ordinary horrific-looking mask like what people wear in Halloween costume parties. The mask must also be complete with fangs, snout and horns.

This celebration is usually held during the month of February, before the Lenten season which is signified by Ash Wednesday. If it is linked with the Catholic religion, then why would they be wearing demon suits? Actually, these "vejigantes," have a noble and symbolic mission to perform, despite their demonic costumes. They will be going around town, armed with their "vejigas" or inflated cow bladders, and they will be whipping or striking the children or passers by with these weapons - but only as an outward appearance of it, without their intention of hurting - to drive evil spirits away.

Spectators will be delighted to join the joyful crowd as they chant noisily to encourage the vejigantes to do their task. Aside from that, they may eat and drink merrily, listen or dance to traditional music, salsa or popular music, and watch the parade of the King and Queen of the Carnival. All these festivities end with the appropriate "Burial of the Sardine" where a coffin with a model fish is burnt, signifying the burning of sins and the start of Lent.

Fisherman's Wharf, a Center for San Francisco Travel Options

San Francisco's most often chosen destination is Fisherman's Wharf. Home of excellent dinning, as you walk the wharf during the day your mouth will water at the smell of the succulent Dungeness crab. The smell of the fine seafood that you may sample fades to the aroma of San Francisco's famous Sourdough bread as you wonder to one of several locations that are in the vicinity. Fisherman's Wharf Tours are a great way to take in the entire wharf during a visit, both historic and fun. However, within a short walk of the wharf are many San Francisco travel options.

Ghirardelli Square is just across the street from the wharf. Home to Ghirardelli Chocolate's flagship location, the chocolate giant has been in San Francisco since 1852. They moved to the present location in 1895 and the history is rich in its present location. One can sample chocolates and ice cream on breaks from the many attractions of the Wharf. Although it is not the only option to explore in the famous square, it is a destination to not miss.

Pier 39 is also within walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf attractions. Home to 110 shops and several bay front dining choices the location offers post card views of the Bay. The Golden gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the Bay Bridge are all part of the panorama of photo opportunities. Family attractions are available in both locations; therefore, the Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 pass is great for saving money and a San Francisco travel option to consider.

To fill the time other notables in the area include the National Liberty Ship Memorial (the S.S. O'Brien), the Aquarium of the Bay, Anchorage Square, and just a few blocks away is the home of the world champion San Francisco Giants! You are also going to find talented and unique street performers that appear daily, providing one of a kind entertainment opportunity as a portion of a well-rounded day.

The San Francisco travel options are so many. This is just a small portion of the beautiful city and what is available. Fisherman's Wharf attractions are activities not to miss, for sure, but it is not all that the City by the Bay has to offer and I look forward with pleasure at the opportunity to share with all, my favorite big city, in future writings.

Get Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Tickets Today!

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom can be found in Vallejo, California. It's an animal park, amusement park, and marine park all wrapped into one! It is the only park in the world that has all these three features. If you're looking to have some fun with family or friends, getting Six Flags Discovery Kingdom tickets is a great choice to spend the day!

Originally, Discovery Kingdom wasn't the first name it was called back when it first opened in 1968. It was then known as Marine World in Redwood City, California. Due to the high property values in the 1980's, the park was forced to move to Vallejo where it underwent a couple of name changes. In 1998, it was known as The New Marine World Theme Park; in 1999, it was Six Flags Marine World; and finally it was named Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in January 2007. With its new name and brand, the park adapted more changes and is now divided into three areas: Land, Sky and Sea.

There are a lot of animal attractions and interaction with rare animals like anteaters, macaws, and porcupines in the Land area of the park. If you pass by the Animal Outpost early in the morning, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the animal superstars of Discovery Kingdom: Taj, the elephant and Okin, the white Bengal tiger who enjoys a dip in the cool waters.

A great place to find all sorts of wonderful marine creatures and to view the beautiful sea life is in the Sea area of the park. Make sure not to miss the Dolphin Discovery area to meet Mavrick, an Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphin that was born right there in the park just last October.

Best Guest Friendly Hotels in Patpong Bangkok 2009

Ask any traveler to Bangkok where they've visited and 9 out of 10 times you'll hear the words Patpong red light district. It's not just a commercial sex district as most would believe. Hundreds of stalls hawking t-shirts and dubious luxury handbags line the streets of Patpong side by side across from the nefarious business of go go bars and sex clubs.

You haven't visited Bangkok at all if you haven't been to Patpong. That's what anyone who has been to Bangkok will tell you.

Patpong's red light district is an ideal location to stay in for vacation. It has a mixed variety of hotel accomodations that is right for any budget. From first class honeymoon suites for the newlyweds to basic no frills hostels for backpackers. But the most popular of all hotels types in Bangkok are ones that are deemed guest friendly. These hotels don't charge extra fees for inviting guests back to their rooms.

Guest friendly hotels in Bangkok are economical for the budget traveler but not all hotels have such a policy. Non guest friendly hotels charge a joiner fee and it's non negotiable and must be paid. Normally the fee is around THB 500 per night extra but depending on the hotel's policy it can go as high as THB 2000.

Patpong has the fewest amounts of these hotels in the area which is why they are very popular with many frequent travelers familiar with Patpong. Here are the names of such popular hotels:

Montien Hotel
Rose Hotel
Tawana Hotel
Swiss Lodge
Bally's Suites Silom

All of those hotels are in prime locations and just a few minutes walk to the go go bars, beer bars, pubs and clubs in Patpong. Don't miss out on Patpong's Night Market found right in the middle of Patpong 1. You can't miss it as it's right besides the go go bars. Patpong Night Market has loads of Thai souvenirs, local artworks and of course suspiciously cheap Rolex watches for sale.

If you want to venture outside of Patpong, it wouldn't be a problem at all as there are two train systems nearby for quick and easy transport to other commercial and entertainment zones in Bangkok.

Introduction to Thai Food - Khao Soy

When you talk with anyone who has taken a holiday in Thailand, it takes no time at all for the conversation to turn to the great foods that are a "must try." For the adventurous traveler who wants more than just the beaches of the south or the Bangkok mega-city experience, the choice is Chiang Mai in the northern mountains and the "must try" food is Khao Soy.

Every region has local specialty dishes but when you say Khao Soy you are talking about Chiang Mai and the old Lanna Kingdom. It's not surprising that this noodle and curry soup dish may be the most delicious food of your stay in Thailand. What is surprising is that it will usually be the least expensive food on the menu.

I remember a travel writer describing the dish as Thailand's answer to fettuccine Alfredo but I think of it as the world's best chicken noodle soup. It's rich and creamy but not at all heavy, spicy but not hot. The soft texture of the flat egg noodles and stewed chicken is contrasted by the crispy fried noodles and crunchy vegetables garnishing the top. The pale orange/yellow color from the curry base is pleasing and the addition of some standard condiments can give a slightly sour or salty or acidic bite as preferred.

Khao soy was invented hundreds of years ago when Chiang Mai was a wealthy capital city and well placed to be a crossroads for trading. The noodles came with the traders' mule caravans from Yunnan, China in the north. Curry is believed to have come from India and across Burma to the west. Limes, shallots, lightly pickled cabbage, the richness of coconut milk and the talent for making deliciously balanced tastes were the local additions. The descendants of the Yunnanese traders still make some of the best Khao Soi in Chiang Mai ( especially on the small streets near the Ban Haw Mosque and across the Ping River next to Wat Faham) but it is also available in just about every other restaurant in the city with a Thai menu.

Like any food that's been around for centuries there are lots of variations in the preparation and closely guarded family recipes. Some can be complicated but the ones that always taste the best to me are the simple and quickly prepared home cooking style dishes. The ingredients are basic, it's the proportions that are the secret. In all of the methods, chicken cut into reasonable sized pieces is boiled in enough water to make a good stock. In a separate pot, fresh wide egg noodles are boiled for a very short time, drained and placed in a bowl. A thinner noodle has been fried crispy and set aside for garnish.

The soup begins with a prepared red curry paste that is heated in a pan until the paste begins to separate and become fragrant. As the pan heats, chopped garlic is thrown in and sauteed in the oil from the curry paste. When the garlic is cooked soft, coconut milk is added and stirred until the spices are fully dissolved. As the coconut milk becomes fully heated, pour in the stock from the boiled chicken to thin the soup to the desired consistency. At this point you can serve or hold everything at temperature until needed. When ready, pour enough of the hot soup to cover the noodles in a bowl and add pieces of chicken for a small serving. Garnish the top with the crispy noodles.

If you are faithful to the original, there are required condiments for individual use. Small wedges of fresh lime that can be squeezed into the soup are a must. Also standard are small amounts of coarsely chopped shallots and small pieces of cabbage that has been lightly pickled in sugar and salt. Although used very sparingly, Thais usually expect the table to have a bottle of fermented fish sauce, dark soy sauce and a chili sauce. Begin slowly and savor the richness, don't over use any of the sauces. They can add a little extra individual taste but they just aren't needed.

Practical Ideas for Your Dream Trip to Disney World

Planning a vacation is fun and daunting at the same time. Deciding where to say, how much will it cost, what to visit can be confusing with so many different options. Here are some basic tips for planning your Walt Disney World vacation that can help the fantasy begin without too much stress.

First Step: Deciding When To Go
Your first step in planning your dream vacation should start with deciding when to go. Maybe this is the easiest step. You know when you can take a vacation. It probably depends on your work schedule and most of all, your children's school vacations. If you can swing it, going when kids are at school is best. You'll miss the crowds. If your kids are small, what are they going to miss? If they're older, it might not be a great idea to pull them out of school, although they'd love it!

Second Step: Where to Stay

The basic choice here is whether to stay at a Disney World resort or at a hotel in the surrounding Orlando area. Generally those off-site hotels are going to be cheaper than even the Disney Value resorts. They often entice you with free meals for children. But what you have to consider here is the added time and cost of transportation to and from Disney World. Some of the off-site hotels offer shuttles. If you don't want to be bound by your hotel's shuttle schedule, you would have to rent a car and pay for parking.

Another consideration is how many in your group and how many rooms you will need. Some Disney World resorts will not accept more than four in a room. They are strict about room occupancy. Here's a tip: children under three do not count towards the room occupancy total.

Third Step: Buying your Tickets

Okay, so you've got when and where out of the way. Now you're ready to buy your tickets. This can actually be the most confusing part.

You don't need to or want to buy tickets at a day rate and then multiply that rate by the number of days you plan to spend at Disney World. The good news is that the daily ticket rate gets cheaper the longer you stay.

And you might want to consider whether you plan to visit only one park or several. You might even want to visit Animal Kingdom and Disney's Hollywood Studios on the same day. If that's what you have in mind, you might want to consider the Park Hopper Option.

But maybe you have even bigger dreams than that and you'd like to enjoy Disney's water parks too. Or you'd like to visit DisneyQuest, ESPN Sports Complex and Disney's Golf Course. Disney also offers you the option to do that with the Water Park Fun & More Option.

If you can't make up your mind, and would like to leave your schedule open and flexible for a while, it will cost you but it might be worth it. Disney offers a "no expiration" ticket option. With this plan your unused Theme Park days and Water Park Fun & More visits never expire. Your Magic Your Way Base Tickets, which would normally expire in fourteen days, also never expire. Kind of magical: A forever ticket. While the never-never-expire option isn't cheap, there is an advantage, though. You will buy it at today's prices and using them sometime in the future when ticket prices will most definitely have increased.

So the best thing to do is think about all your ticket options, your current and future plans, and your budget, and decide which ticket solution is right for you.

If that's just not possible, remember that you can always upgrade your ticket. If you decide you really, really want to park hop after all and your kids are threatening violence if they don't get to visit the Typhoon Lagoon, you can add on those options while you're at Disney World.

Vacation Packages

Disney offers a wide variety of vacation packages that can make everything simpler for you. Just visit the Disney site to learn more about Disney Magic Your Way Packages.

These packages offer a few amenities like a free photo pass and a Planet Hollywood restaurant certificate. However, Planet Hollywood constantly gets bad reviews and may not be worth it.

Among the most sought after packages is a dining package, which includes eating out at more than 100 Disney restaurants. Cool!

Travel Agents

Well, there are still a lot of choices to be made. There are so many things to do at Disney World and so many ways to do them. How to make a reservation at that special restaurant? Does that park have Extra Magic Hours? What are Extra Magic Hours?

Maybe it's better to have the advice of an experienced travel agent? Someone who can reliably handle everything?

People usually assume that using a travel agency costs more. But that's not true. Among other things, a savvy travel agent can help you find discounts and get you the best rates - and not only will they not charge you (they get paid by Disney), they will normally help you save money and make the best choices so you get the best deals.

Every year and during every season, Disney offers specials. Be sure to check with them or an authorized Disney travel agent to find those out. They can save you a bundle.

So start dreaming and soon those dreams will come true.

What is the Songkran Festival, Pattaya?

What is Songkran? When is it celebrated in Pattaya? What should I know before I go? Will the Songkran experience in Pattaya be for you... The best advice I can offer is "be prepared."

The Songkran festival is the traditional Thai new year and is celebrated from around the 13th April. The actual date varies from region to region and you should check with your tour operator if you do not wish to miss the merriment, or if indeed you want to miss the Songkran Festival. Songkran is celebrated on the 19th April in Pattaya.

Traditionally a blessing offered to monk's and elders water was gently sprinkled on to their hands, Things have certainly changed, and in Pattaya the sprinkling of water has turned in to a giant water fight that lasts up to a week.

The spaying of water from plastic guns, home made water canons or just a plain buckets usually starts at noon and continues to 6pm, however in some of Pattaya's busier beer bar area's and Soi's (street's) the water throwing goes on all day, and night too. Not only do people throw water, but to make it even more fun! add large blocks off ice to the drums that water is stored in. This makes for a very nice surprise, especially if you don't see it coming. It feel's even colder as the air temperature in April will be in the high 30's Brrrrrr!

Some people hate the Songkran festival, after all there is no way of escaping the water throwing, and getting wet. Top tip for surviving the Songkran festival in Pattaya, Take lots of plastic bags to protect your valuables, Camera, Camcorder, cigarettes etc. If some one soaks you with water, soak them back and have a happy New Year

Cultural Activities in Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand is known for being one of the friendliest Asian countries in the world today. Also known as the land of smiles, Thailand is usually a "must go" for most people who want to visit Asia. Most frequently visited for its mix of modern and tradition would be Thailand's beautiful capital, Bangkok.

Bangkok is a real gem if you spend enough time exploring it thoroughly. Exploring the city through its rivers can be a great way to start the visit. The Chao Praya River, or "the river of kings" is probably the most famous river in all of Bangkok. A lot of Thailand's history can be found on the shores of the Chao Praya River, which makes it an even better way to get to know Bangkok. Unlike the modern city, the river gives you a glimpse of how the people here still stick to their old ways and traditions. Canals, or "Klongs", show the wooden houses on stilts with Sampans and floating kitchens nearby.

Further down the river, you can see the famous floating markets which sell all sorts of knickknacks and Thai craft, popular to tourists but yet as much a part of everyday life as it has been for the locals for decades. And if you're not sea-sick by the time you get through the crowded narrow canals, head for the Royal Barges Museum. Beautiful barges which are a distinct trait of Thailand line the area, reminding you of movies like the King and I.

Back on land there is as much to see as there is to do. One thing most tourists who've frequented Bangkok come back time and time again for is the Erawan Shrine. Adorned by hundreds of locals and tourists everyday, this shrine located at the corner of Ploenchit and Ratchadamri Road is one to not miss out. Though it isn't a temple (Wat), its one of the most famous sights in the bustling streets of Bangkok. Many pay their respects and give offerings in hope that their wishes would come true.

For those looking to see a totally different side of Bangkok and something totally unique to Thailand, head down during the Songkran ( Thai New Year ) or also known as the water festival. Held on the hottest days of the year, the streets of Bangkok suddenly line up with people carrying water guns and water balloons, preparing to aim for anyone and everyone. This festival has been part of even the oldest traditions combined with the Thai's spirit of showing people how to have a good time just like they do.

IST Semi-dry Top Snorkel - The Curved Tube Spells the Difference!

You surely won't miss the IST Easy On/Off Buckle, Semi-Dry Top Snorkel when shopping for scuba gear. Not only does the snorkel sport an interesting shape but also features a see-through tube that is coated with striking tint. Nonetheless, aesthetics is hardly the intent for its unique construction as its curvilinear barrel was designed to enhance the flow of air through the tube while redirecting seawater away from the mouthpiece. The excellent top to bottom features of this semi-dry snorkel is discussed in the proceeding paragraphs.

Slightly-Curved and Transparent Tubing: The shape of the tube conforms to the pressure of underwater currents and this curvature efficiently minimizes potential drag from the traction of the snorkel with the mouth. 4 Important Facts About Getting an International Driving Permit

Our lives at home are made so much easier, more efficient, and richer by our cars. They are one of the things that international travelers most miss - so while some complain about spending much of their vacation time waiting for public transport or paying exorbitant amounts for taxis, others get an International Driving Permit and decide to take matters into their own hands. Today we are looking at how to get an International Driving Permit, and 4 important facts relating to driving overseas and your travel insurance that travellers should know.

1. In Australia, IDPs are issued by the same authority that issues your license

If you do an internet search, you will turn up quite a few results offering International Driving Permits for sale, with just the completion of an online form. These are not valid IDPs - the only body that can issue you with an international license is the same body that issued you with you home license. IDPs are basically multiple-language translations of your driver's license, and simply state that your driving license is valid in your home country. A random website obviously can't make that guarantee, and you may end up with hefty costs relating to the incorrect documents (cancellation or curtailment of your trip, etc), if you buy one of these. Costs which a travel insurance won't reimburse.

2. Some countries don't recognize IDPs

There are some areas of the world where if you want to drive, you will need to obtain the relevant local permit. The countries that have not subscribed to the IDP convention, and do not honor an IDP, are:

Brazil

China

Mongolia

Iraq

Nigeria

Somalia

Ethiopia

Eritrea

3. Having an IDP does not guarantee you know the local road rules

This seems obvious, but many travelers fail to inform themselves of the local driving regulations before heading overseas. You will need to learn a variety of phrases in the native language of your destination, because you will need to be able to read road signs to stay safe. Travel insurance may not be able to cover you if you are doing something blatantly unsafe when you are engaged in an accident (such as the common mistake of driving on the wrong side of the road!). In matters that are legally-related like this, always contact the relevant authority in the country you are visiting rather than relying on internet research. You can usually track the authority down using the tourism websites for the country, or through their consulate.

4. IDPs can be useful if you are asked to surrender your passport

Sometimes immigration officials or police in other countries will ask you to surrender your passport. If you need to be without it for a period of time, an international driving permit can help relieve the hassle of being without recognized identification. As a side note, travelers should not surrender their passports to accommodation providers, no matter what they say their 'rules' are. If you voluntarily give up your passport, travel insurance may not cover you if your accommodation 'loses' it.

The Best Tourist Sites in Bangkok

Bangkok on the Chao Phraya River is the capital and primary city of Thailand. Bangkok, which means "city of angels," is the social, financial and political hub of Thailand. With many renowned temples, palaces, parks as well as hotels and nightclubs, Bangkok is a major tourist center in Asia. Here is a list of its major sites.

The spectacular Grand Palace and the associated Wat Phra Kaeo are the most photographed sites in the town. The vast palace built in 1782 by King Rama I was the residence of the Royal Family. Wat Phra Kaeo featuring the renowned Emerald Buddha statue is the holiest temple of the country. Both these revered places are open year round. Chao Phraya River is the soul of the city and without an alluring boat ride on the river, no Bangkok trip would be complete. The Chao Phraya Express provides a cheap and comfortable way to see the various sights by avoiding the heavy traffic. Go for a memorable one-hour dinner cruise in a teak wood boat, or on a deluxe yacht to watch the glorious sunset.

Take a cross-river ferry to reach Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), on the other side of the Chao Phraya River, and climb the sheer steps of the incredible temple for an amazing view of the city. Wat Arun, featuring a 79-metre porcelain covered Pagoda with elaborate floral pattern is one of Southeast Asia's most renowned temples. To escape from the pollution and bustle of the city, visit the tranquil and beautiful Dusit Park. The green heaven with teak mansions, gardens and the Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall is the best place to stroll around or relax. Lumpini Park featuring numerous trees, jogging paths, Tai Chi classes, bicycle roads as well as many art shows and festivals is another popular Bangkok park.

Wat Pho near the Grand Palace is the enormous temple complex that contains the oldest and largest temples in the city. The temple built in the 16th century holds the celebrated, 46 meters long and 15 meters high, gilded reclining Buddha statue. In addition, the place has the best-known massage school in the country and a museum with a fantastic collection of frescos, inscriptions and statues. Bangkok National Museum, displaying a grand collection of various artifacts is the biggest museum in Southeast Asia. The museum with various rooms and many pavilions truly represents the cultural, religious and social formation of the country. Never miss the collection of royal objects including the magnificent chariots.

The majestic Vimanmek mansion, which holds several imperial photographs, furniture, paintings and other artifacts from 19th century, is the world's biggest golden teak building. This former summer citadel of the royal family has stunning lawns and gardens to stroll.

Enjoy a pleasant shopping experience at the crowded Chatuchak Market. With over 8,000 stalls in a 35-acre area, the vendors sell almost everything. Use your haggling skills in this wonderful market that is known for illegal wildlife trade too. Shopping at Damnoen Saduak floating market highlighting numerous narrow channels full of wooden row boats and merchants selling various kinds of products would be another amazing experience.

The colossal Siam Ocean World displaying over 30,000 species in its seven underground demonstration zones is an astounding aquatic wonderland to visit. Get a stunning view of the town from the Vertigo Restaurant and Moon bar of the Banyan Tree Hotel while enjoying a rooftop sunset dinner.

Orlando Villa Rentals - Enjoy a First Class Florida Vacation at an Affordable Price

If you are planning to spend a vacation or holiday in Orlando or at Disney World, then one of the first things you need to do is to figure out what kind of accommodations are best for you. Are you coming with your whole family or coming with a few friends? If so, then one of the best things you can do is to get an Orlando villa rental rather than reserving rooms in a hotel.

Renting a villa or vacation home has become a preference for savvy vacationers in Orlando due to several factors including convenience, luxury, location and above all economy.

The convenience factor is due to the fact that many of the villa rentals are located within minutes of Disney World. You will not have to spend much time in your car going to and from Disney World or other attractions. In fact, if you chose a villa in a resort community like Windsor Hills, you won't have to drive at all.

Windsor Hills is a gated community located 1.5 from the gates of Disney World. The resort offers a shuttle bus service to Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios. But that is not all you get in this community.

Each home and villa at Windsor Hills features a master suite with king or queen size bed, TV and a master bathroom with a garden tub and separate shower. All vacation homes and rental villas have a private screened swimming pool with spa and all townhomes have a small pool. Each has a fully equipped kitchen with breakfast area and formal dining area, TV, VCR or DVD player and a washer and dryer. Homes are available with game rooms that include billiards, table tennis and air hockey along with play stations for kids.

That is not all you get when you rent a villa in a community like Windsor Hills. The community also offers a variety of recreation and activities for all ages including a children's playground, state-of-the-art fitness center, sand volleyball, basketball and tennis courts, 40-seat movie theatre, video arcade and billiards.

While you get all these community services similar to what you would get in a hotel, you also have the privacy of your own home or villa. You can have a barbeque outside your private pool at night. Put your kids to sleep in their own rooms and enjoy the comfort of a spacious villa.

It sounds ideal, and it is ideal especially when you consider the price. A four bedroom home or villa at Windsor Hills starts at $160 per night. Can you get four bedrooms, a private pool and all the amenities I have listed above for $160 per night in any hotel in Orlando? The answer is no, and that is why thousands of visitors have chosen to stay in Orlando villa rentals rather than hotels.

Take a look at the villas that are on offer on this website and make your reservation now. The best villas are usually rented months in advance and if you wait to the last moment you will miss out on great opportunities.

Sports Facts - Women's Volleyball

Did you know...

London will host the 2012 Olympic Volleyball Tournament. A maximum of 12 teams will participate in the event. The United Kingdom and Brazil -2008 Olympic gold medal- have qualified for the 2012 London Summer Olympics. Curiously, Great Britain has never competed in the Pre-Olympics, World Cups, World Championships and Olympic Games. Great Britain did not qualify for the European Championships in 2007.

The People's Republic of China, Brazil and Russia are the favorites for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. China won the gold medal at the Girls' Under- 18 World Volleyball Championships in Mexico in 2007.

The United States hopes to win its first world title in 2009. With Lang Ping as coach -a former Chinese volleyball player who had taken part in the 1982 World Cup and 1984 Olympics- the U.S. women's volleyball team trains very hard for the 2009 World Cup in Tokyo (Japan).

From 1962 to 1967, Japan dominated the international tournaments and players from that Asian country won two World Championships.

Venezuela qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics through the South American Pre-Olympic in Lima, Peru. For the first time, Venezuela defeated Peru 3-2 ( 22-25, 27-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-12). Curiously, Venezuela has never participated in the World Championships or Olympic Games. In 1982, Venezuela finished 5th place at the Central American & Caribbean Games...

Russia has got seven world championships ( USSR ' 52, France ' 56, Brazil ' 60, Bulgaria ' 70, Uruguay ' 73, China ' 90, Japan ' 06 ) and four Olympic titles (Mexico ' 68, West Germany ' 72, USSR ' 80, South Korea ' 88).

In 1980, South Korea -one of the world's best volleyball teams- did not send a team to the Pre-Olympics in Bulgaria. Why ? Between 1948 and 1987, South Korea -an anti-Communist state in the 20th century- did not establish formal diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of Bulgaria. The tournament was part of the Olympic qualification system for the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.

Algeria -which won the gold medal at the 2007 Pan African Games- is the first Arab team to participate in the Olympic Games (Beijing 2008).

From 1952 to 1973, China did not compete in the World Championships ( Moscow ' 52, Paris ' 56, Rio ' 60, Moscow ' 62, Tokyo ' 67, Sofia ' 70 ) and Asian Games ( Jakarta ' 62, Bangkok ' 66, Bangkok ' 70 ). Why ? Because the People's Republic of China was not member of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball ( FIVB ). In 1974, China became an official member of the FIVB. This nation made its international debut at the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran (Iran). Three weeeks later, China competed in the World Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico. In the preliminary round, China lost two matches: Poland (3-1) and Japan (3-0/ 1972 Olympic champion). The People's Republic of China finished in 14th place -among 24 nations- at the 1974 FIVB World Championships. In the 1980s, China became the first country to win 5 of 8 major volleyball tournaments:

1980: China boycotted the Moscow Olympics

1981: Japan World Cup-1st place

1982: Peru World Championships-1st place

1984: Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games-1st place

1985: Japan World Cup-1st place

1986: Czechoslovakia World Championships-1st place

1988: South Korea Olympic Games-3rd place

1989: Japan World Cup- 3rd place

South Korea won the FIVB U-20 World Championship in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 1977. Korea beat China for the gold medal. For the first time, three volleyball teams from Asia competed in the finals (Korea, China and Japan).

Massachusetts (United States) is the birthplace of volleyball...

The Romanian women's volleyball squad won the gold medal at the 1980 World Olympic Qualification in Varna (Bulgaria). Final standings:

1.Romania

2.Bulgaria

3.Brazil

4.North Korea

5.Hungary

6.Mexico

Like many former Soviet-bloc nations, Ukraine was one of the last members of the FIVB. Surprisingly, Ukraine won the silver medal at the 1993 World Youth Championships in South America.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea / North Korea -which won the Olympic bronze medal in Munich in 1972- did not want to compete in the World Championships in 1974. The team also did not participate in the Asian Cup in Melbourne (Australia) in 1975.

Mexico hosted the 2007 Girl's Youth World Championships. There were 16 teams: Mexico, Serbia, South Korea, Belarus, Brazil, Japan, Puerto Rico, Germany, Italy, Russia, Dominican Republic, Peru, China, USA, Tunisia and Turkey.

Nigeria became the first black African team to qualify for the FIVB World Cup in 1982. On September 14, Peru -1979 Pan American silver medalist- upset Nigeria -African champion- in the opener of the World Cup. The score was 15-0, 15-0,15-0.

Volleyball is one of the most popular Olympic sports in South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong, North Korea and the People's Republic of China.

The United States won the gold medal at the 1981 NORCECA Tournament. The U.S. women's volleyball team won the international tournament after losing in the final three times in a row ( 1975, 1977, 1979 ).

In the 1980s, Maria Salgado Barroso (Brazilian volleyball player) played in the Japanese Volleyball League.

Minorka Marisela Mercado Carrero was one of the "most beautiful volleyball players" in the world. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, she played for Venezuela. Minorka represented her country at the 1989 World Youth Cup in Lima, Peru. On September 3, 1993 she became the second sportswoman elected Miss Venezuela. Minorka was discovered by Osmel Sousa -Director of Miss Universe Venezuela. Under the direction of Osmel, she was second runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant in 1994...

The German Democratic Republic / East Germany -Olympic silver medalist in 1980- did not compete at the FIVB Women's World Cup in Peru in 1982.

The first Women's Volleyball World Cup was in Moscow ( USSR / Russia) in 1952.

The U.S. women's volleyball team has not won the World Championships.

Stop Off Destinations For a Trip to Australia

Australia is a long way from any other continent and so getting here can feel a bit like running a marathon. A good option is to break up the flight and include a stop off on your way to or from Australia. Another good idea is to stay a little longer and visit another country in the southern hemisphere whilst you are here.

This solution won't work for everyone though. You need at least 3 weeks to visit Australia so adding on a couple of 3 night stop offs will sadly reduce your time too much. One stop off for a couple of days however could be manageable.

Many travellers choose to do a stop over for a few days on the way there or way back from Australia. This also has the added benefit of breaking up the long flight and the jet lag. Asia is usually a classic choice for this and see below for more recommendations for stop overs:

Bangkok and Thailand

This is a popular holiday destination for the Australians as there are a few flight operators keeping flights competitive, and it's still reasonably cheap when you get there.

Here are some suggestions as to what to do whilst in Bangkok:

1) A must visit is the Grand Palace. Whilst you can't actually go into the Palace the buildings are beautiful and can be admired from the outside. This is the official residence of the King but is now only used for special occasions.

2) The Wat Sai Floating Market is a good one to visit and you can get on a barge outside the Grand Palace. It's also good to combine a visit to the Royal Barges Museum. They have some fabulous boats on display that have been used by the King.

3) For the best shopping go to the Chatuchak Weekend Market It's very large so its easy to get lost here. There is everything you could possibly think of here and it's also a good place to eat as there are plenty of restaurants. My advice is to get there early as the heat and crowds get worse as the day goes on. It is open from 7am.

4) If you would like to see more of Bangkok, then take a Segway Tour. This is a tour with a difference as you will be on a 2 wheeled electronic device. They are easy to use and they give you a real sense of freedom as you cruise the streets of Bangkok.

5) No trip to Thailand is complete without experiencing the Bangkok nightlife. Head to the city and take in a lady boy show or just enjoy a few drinks and watch the world go by.

If you would rather head to the beaches of Thailand then consider the area around Phuket. Jet Star fly directly to and from Phuket from Sydney and at certain times of the year there are special reduced fares.

I'd only recommend Phuket if you are a party animal. It's a bit like an Asian equivalent of Ibiza. It's a very big resort with hundreds of clubs and bars and restaurants. If you are after a quieter holiday then I would head to Phi Phi Island. This is a popular day trip from Phuket but a great alternative if you need some quiet time. It is near where they filmed "The Beach."

There isn't room in this article to explore all the stop off alternatives. Other stop over options include Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Singapore. If you are travelling from the US then Fiji is a good stop off to break up the flight and see another beautiful island getaway.

If your trip to Australia is more than 3 weeks then I'd seriously consider a trip to New Zealand or even the tropical island of Bali. The flight times from Australia are reasonable.
